The Hasanparthy police cracked the double murder of a couple on Wednesday within their house in a day.

Police arrested K. Prashanth, 32, a neighbour of victims Gaddam Damodar, 60, and Padma, 54. Police said he used to watch the movements of the couple closely. “Prashanth used to run a grocery store but incurred huge losses and was in dire need of money,” police said. Police commissioner V. Ravinder said a special team was formed after the double murder on Tuesday to find the killer. Upon questioning the relatives and neighbours, they closed in on Prashanth who confessed to the crime. Police recovered 132 grams gold, 356 grams silver, a cellphone and `6,500 in cash from him.

“Knowing that the couple had money and gold, Prashanth decided to rob them. He secretly entered the house at around 9 pm before the couple locked the gates and hid in a dark corner. When Padma went into the bathroom, he tried to snatch her chain. When she shouted for help, he slit her throat, killing her on the spot. He then found Damodar sleeping on a cot and smashed his head with a brick before slitting his throat,” P. Kishan, Hasanparthy inspector said.

The murder created a sensation in the city with people being worried about their own safety. Some people even claimed that recent rumours on social media about gangs were true.
