Neelakanteswar jatara got off to a colourful start

The three-day Neelakanteswar jatara (village festival) got off to a colourful start in the vicinity of Kanteswar temple in connection with Ratha Sapthami here on Tuesday. The festival which falls on every maghasudha sapthami of Hindu almanac is celebrated in a grand way.Devotees from across the district have been arriving at the 6th century Shaivite temple to offer special prayers.

On the first day, devotees pulled the chariot carrying the idols of Neelakanteswara Swami and his consort Parvathi from the temple to Talli Gori (mother’s tomb) and back. The gori is located just 150 metres from the temple on Armoor Road.

Devotees made serpentine queues since morning to offer prayers. They played kolatams as part of the celebrations.The temple premises, including koneru (holy pond), have been illuminated and spruced up.Police have stepped up security in the town and are diverting traffic for smooth conduct of the jatara.
