Six puppies were found abandoned inside a small carton box under the Punjagutta flyover, opposite to a private bank.

How the puppies were left on the main road is not known, but a coconut seller saw the box and put it on the elevated median where ornamental plants are kept by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for beautification of the pillars of the flyover.

Initially, nobody noticed the puppies but after one or two curious passers-by stopped to see what was inside the box, people started gathering . But no one seemed to be ready to take them. It was left to a small girl, who came there with her father, to take the initiative and take one puppy with her.

The coconut seller, who refused to be identified, said he saw the box and went near it and found the puppies. “I picked up the box and placed it on the elevated median to ensure that the puppies did not get injured,” he said.

Efforts to alert the animal rights organisation did not evince any response. The representative of one reputed organisation, when contacted, said they only take injured dogs and not puppies. He went on to say that there are no organisations that accept abandoned newborn puppies. The calls made to telephone numbers of other NGOs working on animal welfare went unattended.
