From July-end, the Telangana government is making preparations to lift 2 tmc of Godavari water per day from the Medigadda barrage. Preparations are also afoot to lift another 3 tmc from the river for which the construction is under way.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao made the announcement while presenting the State government’s progress report during the Telangana State Formation Day celebrations held at Public Gardens on Sunday. He recalled the injustice meted out to the Telangana region in undivided Andhra Pradesh by successive governments in terms of irrigation. He pointed out that the projects promised to the region were confined to papers.

“After the State formation, people entrusted upon us the responsibility of diverting water to their barren lands. We took it up as a challenge and commenced the construction of major irrigation projects simultaneously on Godavari and Krishna rivers,” he said.Besides completing pending projects in the first phase and providing water to 10 lakhs acres in drought-prone Mahabubnagar district alone, the government is geared up for the speedy construction of the Kaleshwaram and Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Schemes to make optimum use of the Godavari and Krishna waters respectively.

The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project will shortly supply sufficient water to irrigate 45 lakh acres to cultivate two crops per year in about 16 districts. Further, the works of the Sitarama Lift Irrigation project are in progress, while the storage capacity of the Devadula project was being further increased.“Once the irrigation projects are completed, one can see only green fields across Telangana. With two crops a year, the State will emerge as the rice bowl of India and rejuvenate the State’s economy,” the Chief Minister said.

Support for farmers

Apart from resolving irrigation water to farm fields, the State government is providing much-needed support to farmers in terms of free quality power supply, financial assistance through Rythu Bandhu, insurance cover under Rythu Bima, and also implementing the loan waiver scheme. The TRS government waived crop loans of farmers up to Rs 1 lakh in its first term and is gearing up to implement the same again. With 24-hour free power supply, farmers experienced great relief, giving them new hope. “In the entire country, Telangana is the only State providing 24-hour power supply to all sectors, including agriculture. The qualitative change in the power supply rejuvenated both agriculture and industrial sectors,” he said.

He said Rythu Bandhu, which provided Rs 8,000 per acre per year, caught the attention of the entire world. “The scheme was praised by United Nations as one of the greatest schemes in the world. It also inspired many State governments as well as the Union government, which launched the Prime Minister Kisan Samman Yojana Scheme. The amount given under Rythu Bandhu will be enhanced from Rs 8,000 per acre to Rs 10,000 per acre from this year,” he said.

Chandrashekhar Rao said the State government initiated drafting a comprehensive policy formulation to ensure support price to the crop. While crop colonies will be created to ensure adequate demand for the produce, reforms will be brought to see that different crops are grown in different lands and are brought to the markets in a regulated manner. The government decided to establish food processing units across the State as well.

The Chief Minister further said the government schemes prevented suicides and raised fresh hopes in the lives of farmer about their future. “I myself am a farmer and aware of their agony. I am determined to make agriculture into a profitable profession,” he said.
